What are Toyota Safety Sense Features?

What are the perks of driving a Toyota vehicle? The first to come to mind are typically the smooth ride it provides, or the infotainment center and heated seats. Aside from the visuals, many Toyota vehicles come with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), which is the auto dealer’s flagship program of safety innovations and technologies. First introduced in 2015, Toyota Safety Sense has been constantly evolving by adding new features and reducing the number of accidents on the road.  

What are Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) Features? 

Toyota Safety Sense features come equipped in almost all new and used Toyota vehicles, designed to help keep the driver and all passengers safe. Continue reading the list of features below.  

TSS Features

Pre-Collision System w/ Pedestrian Detection (PCS) 

• PCS is designed to help detect a vehicle, pedestrian, bicyclist, or motorcyclist and then alert with an audio/visual forward-collision warning under certain circumstances. If you don’t react, the system is designed to then provide automatic emergency braking.  

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) 

• Adaptive cruise control system uses vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to help maintain a preset distance from the vehicle ahead of you, at speeds above 20 MPH.

Lane Departure Alert w/ steering assist 

• When inadvertent lane departure is detected, DRCC will issue an audio/visual lane departure warning. If the driver does not take corrective action, the system is also designed to provide gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance. 

Lane Tracing Assist 

• When DRCC is enabled and lane markers are detected, lane tracing assist uses the lines on the road and preceding vehicles to provide active driving assistance and help keep the vehicle centered in its lane. While LTA is activated, the available Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) is designed to monitor the driver’s inputs, such as steering operation. If the EDSS determines the driver is not attentive and the driver does not respond to prompts to resume control of the vehicle, it can then bring the vehicle to a stop under certain conditions.  

Road Sign Assist 

• Using an intelligent camera, the RSA system detects speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs and certain warning signs. The RSA will then display an icon of the sign on the multi-information display (MID).  

Automatic High Beams 

• Designed to help you see more clearly at night. At speeds above 21 mph, the AHB system detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles. To assist the driver, the AHB system will automatically toggle between high and low beams accordingly. 

Proactive Driving Assist 

• Provides gentle braking into curves or gentle braking and/or steering to help support driving tasks such as distance control between your vehicle and a preceding vehicle, pedestrian or bicyclist.

• Pre-Collision System w/ Pedestrian Detection (PCS)

Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 & 2.5+  

TSS 2.5 & 2.5+ comes equipped with the same features as TSS 2.0 with the addition of a high-resolution camera, millimeter wave radar, and grille-mounted radar to better detect pedestrians or objects in the path of a vehicle.
